The Revolution by Alicia Michaels

(The Bionics Novels, #3)

Published by: Crimson Tree Publishing

Publication date: January 18th 2018

Genres: Adult, Dystopian, Science Fiction

Blythe Sol has a New Year’s Resolution, but it’s not your typical self-improvement plan. She wants to end the conflict between the government and the Resistance once and for all—by sneaking into Washington D.C. and putting a bullet in President Drummond’s skull. If she can cut the head off the snake, the genocide of the Bionics might finally end. But if she fails, she will surely bring retaliation crushing down upon the entire Resistance.

Blythe and fellow soldier Dax Janner are already coping with the loss of people they loved. When their dormant feelings for each other begin to rekindle, they struggle with feeling anything positive after so much suffering. The return of Gage will only confuse matters more. As the terrorist sect known as The Rejects begins to work hand in hand with the government to push the Resistance toward all-out war, the battle will be brought to their doorstep. Will the movement stand tall and conquer—or collapse under the strain and be destroyed for good?

The Revolution is the thrilling third novel in the award-winning Bionics series by Alicia Michaels.

~Excerpt~

Swallowing the bile rising in the back of my throat, I close my human eye again and zoom in through the scope. I move the rifle until the crosshairs rest over Drummond’s forehead.

“I’m taking the shot.”

“Wait,” Dax says. “Maybe you shouldn’t.”

Disbelief drops my jaw, but I don’t take my eyes off the president. “What? Why the hell not?”

“Listen to me, B,” he says, his voice sounding closer. I feel him crouching beside me. “If we kill him now, they’ll just say we did it to silence him. Don’t you understand? If we kill him now, he’ll look like a martyr.”

My palms break out in a sweat, and Drummond’s voice fades to an unintelligible warble as my blood begins to rush so fast I can hear it roaring in my ears. Dax is right … but Drummond is in my sights. The man who destroyed our lives and killed my family. The man who murdered Yasmine and threatened to come for the rest of us.

“I have to,” I whisper, curling my finger around the trigger once more, shaking my head to clear it. “We came all this way.”

“Undetected,” Dax argues. “We can leave the same way. It’s not too late.”

“Yes, it is,” I argue. “It’s too late to go back! I won’t get another shot like this.”

“We’ll find another way,” he insists, his hand now on my shoulder. “A way that doesn’t make us look like the terrorists he’s making us out to be.”

I jerk away from his hold and refocus through the scope. “You can only treat someone like shit for so long before they snap. You can’t keep backing people into a corner without expecting them to eventually come out swinging. Drummond wants me to be a terrorist? Fine … I’ll earn my fucking spot on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. I’m taking the goddamn shot.”

Dax whispers a string of curses under his breath, but he doesn’t physically try to stop me. He doesn’t touch me again. I think it’s because, deep down, he wants to see this fucker pay for what he did to Yasmine. He wants to see Drummond fall, even though he knows the consequences we’ll face for it.

I zoom in a little closer … so close it feels like I’m staring directly into his cold, dead eyes. Spittle gathers in the corners of his mouth as he gets really riled up, waving his hands and pointing as he raises his voice to rally the crowd to his side. All around the world, people are buying into this … believing every poisonous word that comes from his mouth.

It’s time to silence him once and for all.

Taking another deep breath, I hold it as I prepare for my moment of truth. I see my father falling to the ground with a bullet in his skull … my mother sobbing hysterically as Skyye’s insides paint our front lawn red. And the hot rage in my veins goes cold like ice, freezing there as the entire world around me goes still.

As I exhale, my finger squeezes the trigger.

~Here’s a sneak peek from one of the sponsors~

Discern – an award-winning and bestselling urban fantasy novel by Andrea Pearson

Nicole put her things down, not wanting anything to be in her hands when she picked up the disgusting book. She reached for it, but hesitated. Already, she could sense warmth coming from the leather cover, and she wasn’t even touching it. Its magical pulses were different from the other items—they seemed to drip off the book like sweat.

Nicole hesitated, but wasn’t sure why. It wasn’t as if something bad would happen, right? She took a deep breath and placed her hands on the book. It shivered under her touch and she cringed, pulling back. The sensation of warm leather made her flesh crawl, and she rubbed her hands and arms on her jeans, trying to get the feeling to go away.

Come on, Nicole. Don’t wimp out.

Without letting herself think about it, she picked up the book and lifted the cover.

A wind rushed over her, blowing her hair back, roaring in her ears. She caught a brief whiff of tobacco smoke before the surge of air reversed and sucked the breath out of her lungs, making her gasp.

The floor under her quaked. The book vibrated. The leather on the cover moved, muscles beneath it flexing. Nicole tried to drop the book, but couldn’t. She was unable to control her hands or fingers. They clenched so tightly, they ached. A shadow covered the pages of the book, preventing her from reading.

What was going on? She gasped again, trying to breathe against the strong wind. She felt someone touch her shoulder, but she couldn’t move. Her fingers still clung to the book. The shadow on the pages shifted, roiled, and turned toward her, the brief outline of a face visible. It watched her for several moments.

Nicole . . .

The voice was soft, deep. A strange yearning inside her made her want to read the book, to understand. To join the owner of the voice, though she didn’t know where or what he was.

The wind slowed to a gentle and familiar caress across her cheek. Familiar?

Then suddenly, it all stopped. The book fell from her hands and slammed itself shut. She backed away, her arms, legs—everything—shaking.

“What happened?” Professor Coolidge asked next to her, making her jump.

“I—I don’t know.” Nicole tried to smooth her hair, but her hands shook too much. She tucked them under her arms. “It said my name . . . and there was a shadow. In-inside it.”

Coolidge lifted the leather book. His mouth popped open in surprise. “You’ve activated a force within it—something alive.” He looked at her, fear and worry on his face. “How did you do that?”

Nicole shook her head. “I don’t know,” she repeated.

Professor Coolidge put the book back on the table. “I’m not sure what to say, other than the book is much more powerful than it used to be.” He peered at her, scrutinizing her. “And I’d love to know why it called to you, why you woke it up, when so many others have not.”

~An excerpt from the Amazon bestseller BOUND IN BLUE~

Book One of the Sword of Elements by Heather Hamilton-Senter

Morgan stiffened and made a hissing sound between her teeth. “Be still. Others are coming.” Striding over, she poked me hard between the eyes.
“Hey!” I yelped. “What the hell?” A strange sensation spread out from the spot where her finger had jabbed me.
“Stay still. Be quiet. Do not move.”
Auntie Morgan be cray cray.
And then the stream of truly crazy began to file into the room.
A young woman with hair teased into a neon red mohawk, so small she seemed like a child except for the wild, knowing look in her eyes. A crone—there was no other word that fit—with a long braid of white hair wrapped twice around her waist like a belt. A dark-skinned mountain of a man with a lip ring connected to a heavy gold chain threaded through a gaping hole in one earlobe. More followed, all as strangely dressed as the first three, some with hair dyed in colors that defied description. A curious nurse peered into the room with wide eyes, but a glare from Morgan sent her away.
I was abandoned to the freak show.
Some of them touched Mom’s cold forehead with gentle fingers. Others whispered words of sympathy to Morgan. They all ignored me as if I were invisible. I couldn’t move, and the white of my fear went black and dirty on the edges like snow in the gutter.
Then the strange entourage was gone except for a good-looking guy leaning against the wall beside the door. Softly curling hair with a hint of ginger poked out from under a red baseball cap, and he had the kind of neatly trimmed five o’clock shadow that’s grown on purpose.
“Hello, Morgana,” he drawled.
“I prefer Morgan, as you well know, Thomas Redcap.” She made his name an insult.
The man’s smile only widened as he looked her up and down in a way that would have made me blush. “Ah yes, you’re all modern and casual now. I’d heard.” He sounded Irish or something. “Love the outfit, by the way. Did you join a band?” He pushed away from the wall and sauntered into the room towards her, leaning in as if he intended to give her a kiss.
“Don’t. You. Dare.”
Redcap changed the movement into a mocking bow. “Well, you can’t blame a lad for trying, Morgana the Fair and Perilous.” As he approached the bed without even a glance in my direction, orange irritation crackled along the edges of my vision, intruding on my stained and dirty white fear. He shook his head sadly. “Poor Viviane. Do I have your leave to continue?”
“Get on with it.”
Redcap nodded and then quickly—so quickly I almost couldn’t comprehend what I was seeing—his hand shot out and a pointed fingernail dragged down Mom’s arm, peeling dead flesh from it in one long curl like the skin off an apple.
Horror cut through me like bright lightning. I tried to stand, but I only made the chair move a little across the floor. The man’s head shot up at the sound and he looked right at me with amber eyes edged in red. He looked at me, but he didn’t seem to see me. Relaxing, he turned away.
And then Redcap put the long strip of my mother’s skin into his mouth and swallowed it.
