Delayed Departure by Abigail Drake

(Passports and Promises, #2)

Publication date: August 16th 2017

Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

When Bethany Beaumont finds a book about life in the sultan’s harem, she discovers it’s actually a guide to the lost art of seduction. Just what she needs as she departs on a study abroad trip to exotic Istanbul. She’s struggling to get over her ex, and the book of dirty little secrets might be just the thing to help…if only she could find someone to practice on.

Half-Turkish and full of Australian swagger, teaching assistant Adam Kent seems to fit the bill. They decide to become lovers for the duration of the trip, and then part ways. Forever.

But not every lesson can be found in a book, and sometimes falling in love changes everything. When Bethany is forced to confront her past, and the promises she made to someone else, will it really be as easy as she thought to let Adam go?

~Review~

Oh my, Oh my. This was quite a read!  This is actually the first book I’ve read of Abigal’s and I’m hooked! I NEEEED moRE! AHhHHHH! Delayed Departure is the second book in the Passports and Promises series, but it can be read as a stand alone! Abigail Drake paints such a beautiful picture of Turkey. The descriptions of these exotic places are so vivid that you feel like you’re there. This wasn’t the typical romance novel; each character has depth and real emotions that are so believable and actually create foundation for love not just lust.  I can’t wait to read other books of this author!

Delayed Departure basically starts off with, Greg telling Bethany he won’t be able to go on the study trip to Turkey.  Going on this study trip with Greg is something she looks forward to but he backs out at the last-minute for a job offer! I know right! They had this planned for sooo long and he just backs out like that. At first I thought that Greg was a coward and selfish. I mean he basically just hides behind Bethany to keep his secret from his parents, instead of facing them. But at the end of the novel I feel like his character really grows and he really does change. Bethany is in a ‘relationship’ with Greg which we later discover is a fake relationship. Bethany has been covering for Greg for soo long, and it really has taken a toll on her. She constantly puts others before herself. She has grown up with a dream which was shattered two years ago and yet, but she lives in hope. She is literally living a lie. You can tell she’s not happy and is tired of it, but in her mind she has to.  But as the story progresses, Bethany is more confident, and she finds a new strength in her that she didn’t know she had; she finally stops being naïve and lets herself be free, ultimately she becomes the person she was meant to be.

So Bethany ends up going on the trip on her own, at the beginning of the trip, she’s unhappy with the turn of events, but she quickly makes friends and start to appreciate the purpose of her visit.  I loved how open and friendly all the characters were with each other.

On the trip she meets Adam, an Australian T.A on the trip. They hate each other at first, but slowly warm up to each other. Adam is a sweetheart. He is kind, considerate and doesn’t judge. But no matter what Bethany does, he finds a way to pick on her or make her feel stupid. The thing is though that he doesn’t know her and vice versa. I immediately fell in love with Bethany and Adam. They have such amazing chemistry and I’m a sucker for the “hate you-love you” type romance. They’re bickering and banter is classic and so perfect.

“I looked up and caught Adam staring at me. Again. He seemed quite focused on keeping track of me all day. I had a feeling he wanted to make sure I didn’t get into trouble again, but maybe it was more than that. Our eyes locked for an instant, and I felt certain he’d been thinking about the kiss, too. It made one thought enter my head and simply refuse to leave. If kissing him was so spectacular, what would sleeping with him be like?”

After reading this quote, I really wish we had Adams POV. The descriptions of the ways he looks at her, just makes me want to know what he’s thinking.

This book has mystery, history, romance, culture, travel, and humor throughout. I highly recommend reading this novel, such a good read and you won’t want to put it down, it will sweep you away from the very start. I can’t wait/ hope for more in the Passports and Promises series! :3 Now I gotta go pick up book one!

“I had often thought about people who lived through strange and compelling times — World War II, the Great Depression, the civil rights movement. These were periods that shaped people in some indelible way. I wondered how this moment would define us. I had never before believed that there was anything special about the era I was growing up in.”

#2:

“It made you wonder: How much of our lives was just luck or good timing, and how much was actually choice? How could it be that tiny serendipitous events could change everything? And if lucky events could change everything, could minor mishaps have the same power?”

#3:

“No one could really explain any of it – an alien planet, a dead dog, Meg leaving home, my mother acting weird. It was as though over the past twenty-four hours, my entire life had become a story that broke constantly and iteratively, like waves crashing into the sand again and again and again, the questions outpacing any answers that were likely to survive. ”

~Excerpt~

Friday evening and his dark-haired beauty hadn’t left the confines of her home. Gervasio stared at the screen in front of him. The tree outside her window provided too much cover, so he clicked on a couple of different links to access his favorite view—her bedroom—where the camera had been installed in the corner by her closet. Gave him an excellent sightline of her bed and desk. There was no mic, so no sound, but he would hear the sweetest noises from her soon enough. Pressing a few buttons, Gervasio zoomed in on his honey bear.

His dark-haired beauty opened the drawer in her desk and removed a couple of items.

Gervasio zoomed closer. She held two boxes. One still had the ribbon he had carefully selected before leaving it on her front porch. The other, was long and elegant. No mark on the box, but he didn’t need one to identify it.

Then, after eyeing them for a second, his girl dropped the boxes in the trash.

Gervasio growled. She cared nothing for the gifts he’d given to show his affection. They were meaningless trinkets to go out with the garbage. Jumping up, Gervasio threw the mouse at the wall. How dare she throw his gifts out?

Damn ungrateful whore was exactly like her mother.

Fists balled, he paced from one side of the room to the other. This was not the time to lose his shit. He had to get it together. His plan was so close to fruition. Gervasio glanced at the calendar. A few more days and she would be ripe for the taking. The way it should be. She had always belonged to him. And once he had her, they would forever be connected.

Gervasio punched the wall directly above the monitors. Then, taking a deep breath, he stared at his lovely one on the screen. She could throw away his gifts, but he would not be so easily tossed aside. Reaching out, he stroked her cheek through the screen. “Eres mia por siempre.”

The front door to the warehouse opened. Better be someone with good news. Gervasio strode out of his office and stopped inches from the messenger. “You find info on el tipo?”

Swifty rubbed his eyebrow. “I’m still digging, but I have some information.”

“Dime.” It was important to know your enemies, even if they came in six-foot piece-of-shit packages.

~Description~

Murder.

Fire.

Revenge.

That’s all seventeen-year-old Alice Monroe thinks about. Committed to a mental ward at Savage Isle, Alice is haunted by memories of the fire that killed her boyfriend, Jason. A blaze her twin sister Cellie set. But when Chase, a mysterious, charismatic patient, agrees to help her seek vengeance, Alice begins to rethink everything. Writing out the story of her troubled past in a journal, she must confront hidden truths.

Is the one person she trusts only telling her half the story? Nothing is as it seems in this edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller from the debut author Emiko Jean.

~Review~

We’ll Never Be Apart is a riveting psychological thriller from page one. It’s a mystery…a thinker…and full of suspense. From the first time I saw the wickedly amazing cover… I knew I had to read this book. The cover just grabs you and doesn’t let go.

The story revolves around Alice who is now in a mental facility after surviving a fire that her twin sister, Celia, started in an attempt to kill her and her boyfriend Jason, whom sadly did not survive. Alice is recovering and trying to get answers about her life and the events that led up to the fire. Alice is determined to find her twin sister and get revenge for Jason. She tries to come to terms with what her sister Celia did by writing her memories of her bad childhood in a journal.  When she realizes that Cellie is in a different ward at the hospital, Alice makes it her mission to find a way to get to her and make her pay by killing her.

A piece of Alice’s plan just happens to be a boy she meets in her ward, Chase. He has some demons of his own and as he and Alice become closer, his story is revealed a bit more and he happens to be more than just the cocky troublemaker he presents himself as. Honestly, Alice is the perfect level of sarcastic which I love and her interactions with Chase made me smile. I mean the romance? (Kind of romance-y) between Alice and Chase was cute, but Alice’s constant moaning over Jason kind of ruined it. But when they first met Alice really tried to win him over to help her out with her plan, are some of my favorite interactions between them. I loved seeing their characters develop.

Emiko Jean is a great writer. Her words were quite poetic and beautiful even with the grittiness of the story. The whole book had this dark, almost spooky feel to it.  I had a lot of fun with this and the characters were both engaging and well fleshed out. I would pick up another book by this author without hesitation in the future, in fact I can’t wait to read more of her work!

I recommend it!

Book Blitz ~ AnguiSH by Lila Felix

AnguiSH by Lila Felix

Published by: Clean Teen Publishing

Publication date: November 6th 2017

Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult

The help-wanted ad on the bulletin board at Ashland’s college was simple enough: mother seeks live-in maid for son. But it turns out Breaker James is a mess in more ways than one. He’s confined to a prison of his own making, crippled by his fear of people and any social interaction whatsoever. Every vibe he’s giving off is begging Ashland to stay away, yet she finds herself strangely drawn to him. Can she coax him out of his darkness and help him overcome the deep trauma of his past to reclaim a normal life?

A contemporary romance perfect for fans of Lauren Oliver’s Before I Fall and JoJo Moyes’ Me Before You, AnguiSH delves deep into complex human emotions and the struggle to move forward from devastating past events.

~Excerpt~

She moved over on the bed, giving me room to get in next to her. I got in. “I’m afraid I’m… God, this is hard to admit.”

Her hand glided down my jaw. “Tell me.”

“I tried—I tried to go out the other day, just for a walk or something. I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t make it past the damned threshold of the door.”

Her face was pure disappointment, and I knew mine mirrored it. Admitting it to her, I felt like a shadow of a man.

“But you tried, right? That has to count. I mean, you go out with me all the time.” Her voice faltered at the end of the sentence.

“I did try. But I couldn’t go through with it.”

She scooted closer to me and put one hand on my face while she buried her own in the hollow of my neck. “Can you just hold me and forget that there’s something we can’t do? I’d like to hang on to the notion that you can do anything—just for the night.”

Mick & Michelle by Nina Rossing

Published by: Harmony Ink Press

Publication date: October 31st 2017

Genres: Contemporary, LGBTQ+, Young Adult

Fifteen-year-old Mick Mullins has a great life: his parents are sweet, his sister is tolerable, and his friendships are solid. But as summer descends on Queens, he prepares to turn his carefree existence upside down by disclosing a secret he has kept long enough. It’s time to work up the courage to reveal that he is not a boy, but a girl—and that her name is Michelle. Having always been the perfect, good boy, Michelle is terrified that the complicated truth will disappoint, hurt, or push away the people closest to her. She can’t continue hiding for much longer, though, because her body is turning into that of a man’s, and she is desperate to stop the development—desperate enough to consider self-medicating with hormones.

Most of all, Michelle fears that Grandpa, who is in a nursing home after a near fatal stroke, won’t survive the shock if he finds out that his favorite grandchild, and the only boy, is a girl. If she kills her beloved Grandpa by leaving Mick behind, she isn’t sure embracing her real identity will be worth the loss.

~Excerpt~

As we walk down the street next to each other, it strikes me that the nagging feeling I’ve been having lately is also down to him, because I look too much like my father. I’m the same height as him but skinnier. I adjust my walk so I don’t mirror his familiar swagger. I wish I didn’t have his hair, down to the identical whorl slightly to the right at the back of our heads. His hair is darker than mine, so dark auburn it looks black when wet, but thin and limp, always flyaway, so no good for keeping long. Buzz cut material, and that looks fine enough on him. My hair is quite short by convenience only. I would have liked to have my mother’s hair, which is thick and robust, a haystack in the mornings, and she uses a straightening iron to control it. If I tried that iron on my hair, I think it’d just melt away and disappear.

“How does summer feel so far?” Dad says and waves at Mrs. McAtee, who used to babysit him when he was little. I don’t think Dad has fond memories of her, because she never babysat me or Ash. No one outside the family was ever allowed to babysit us. “Any plans?” he adds after I fail to reply in the three seconds it takes him to grow impatient.

“Deliver papers and go busking,” I say. I was supposed to wait tables at Pepito’s Italian, but they went bust two weeks ago. I haven’t found anything else. The paper route job stopped last week, because I foolishly resigned when I got the gig with Pepito’s. As for busking… well, that’s more of a wild idea than a realistic plan.

“Busking? You only know three songs.”

“Five songs, and people move around, so they won’t catch on to my limited repertoire. Besides, I can always learn a couple more songs.”

“And what will you do if I, or your ma, come and catch you soliciting funds?”

“I can outrun you easily, Dad. The both of you. Rookie Ryan too.”

“Yeah, yeah. Smart-mouth. We have an alternative plan for you this summer. Busking is not a part of it. Tell you over dinner.”

“What? Why not right away? Are you finally paying for Wizarding Summer School now that I’ve grown out of it?”

“Wait and see.”

Nina Rossing lives in Norway, where the winters are long and the summers short. Despite the brilliant nature surrounding her, she spends more time in front of her computer, or with a book in her hands, than in the great outdoors (though you may find her out on her mountain bike if the weather is good). She works as a high school teacher, which in her opinion is probably the best job in the world.
