But it is very real and it is slowly destroying him. Erik is weakened to the point where he’ll stop performing and start going to school for the first time ever—in his senior year. His only goal is to rebuild his strength so he can return to the stage and perform doing what he loves most in this world. ~Excerpt~

   The moment is perfect to lean in and kiss her. And I badly want to put my hand on her cheek and bring my lips to hers.

Addison looks at her wrist, my fingers still there. “I should go,” she says shattering my thoughts.

     I slide my hand from her wrist, along her palm, lingering on her fingertips with my own. Looking up into her eyes, I ask, Are you sure you want to?”

     She meets my eyes. “No.” Her voice whispers the simple word I was hoping she would say. “But they’re expecting me down there.” My stomach aches when she starts to get up. “Thanks for catching me when I fell.” She brushes the sand off her dress and walks through the wheat grass toward the shore.

~Excerpt~

My heart throbs against my rib-cage as I put one palm on his chest and then the other, not quite meeting his eyes, gazing at the top button of his shirt instead. His heart drums under my fingers, with a lightning-quick rhythm that matches my own. I bite my lip and close my eyes. Somehow, I think I will find the courage I seek easier, if I let the darkness behind my eyelids guide me, instead of the image of him. I take a deep breath—his intoxicating ocean and musk scent filling me. The skin on my fingers prickles, as I slide my fingers upward, touching the warm skin on his neck. Now that my eyes are closed, all my other senses are awake, ravaging me. I lean into him slowly, very slowly. I wish he’d take mercy on me and take the lead, because kissing him seems to require a different kind of courage.

I find his lips before I find the courage.

~Excerpt~

Jessa couldn’t even begin to keep track of all the different emotions that were fighting to the surface at the thought of her mother. She was honored that Emariya wanted her to accompany her, but at the same time, she wasn’t thrilled about leaving home. Even more, her mother’s words before she departed were weighing heavily on her mind.

“Jessa, your job will not be an easy one. Looking after your mistress on this journey will be like nothing you’ve ever done.”

“Has looking after Emariya ever been easy, Mama?” Jessa had teased. It was no secret that her mother often complained of how headstrong Emariya tended to be.
They’d been in the kitchen packing up the last of the food they would be taking with them. “This will be different, Jessa. She will be in danger from much more than a few ruffled feathers over not observing proper formalities. Though you will need to see that she makes a good impression when you present her to the prince—may the Three give you the strength.” The heavily dimpled woman had looked to the heavens. “That won’t be an easy task, either. But Jessa, listen up now. There are those who would happily see her not reach Thalmas, and they will look to stand in her way. What she is doing with this journey…well, there are those who have spoken of its possibility, and are determined to prevent it at all costs.” Her mother had looked her hard in the eye, stressing the importance of what she was saying.

“Spoken of it how?” Jessa was confused. Emariya had only decided to go to Thalmas a few days before. While she talked, she carefully wrapped slices of turkey before tucking them into the canvas pack lying on the table.

Ignoring her question, her mother continued, “She may well be able to finish what her mother started, but only if you can keep her safe.” Mairi had absentmindedly wiped her hands on her apron as she turned away from her daughter.

“What her mother started? I don’t understand, Mama, what are you going on about?” Jessa was starting to worry. Would her mother be all right here without her? Jessa gently touched her mother’s arm, turning her to face her again.

Mairi had sighed. “Lady Valencia came to Eltar because she had dreamt of a day when we might all prosper in peace. Emariya has the ability to bring that peace.”

“Mother, why haven’t you ever mentioned this before? You’ve always been reluctant to speak of Lady Valencia,” Jessa asked, confused. She could tell that her mother felt that what she was saying was gravely important, so why didn’t she just come out with it? Nothing she was saying made sense.

“Because she must find her own path, instead of walking the one she believes she was born to. Do not tell her what I have said, Jessa. Promise me.” Mairi’s expression was serious.

“I promise, Mama.” Jessa patted her mother’s arm, still concerned.

“She’ll have Khane to keep her safe from physical harms—we can hope, at least. But she needs you as well. Her heart tends to run away with her wits. Not everyone you meet will be able to be trusted. It’s up to you to keep her eyes open, but more importantly, you must make sure she keeps her ears open. Jessa, listen to me now: you have got to keep her safe. I tried to keep her mother from harm, but I couldn’t. I pray you have better luck than I did.” Her mother pulled her close in a tender embrace. “But oh, how I shall miss you, my girl.”

“I’ll miss you too, Mama,” Jessa whispered, her heart catching in her throat.

Her mother had an uncanny way of being right, but Jessa couldn’t help hoping her mother had been overestimating the trials that lay ahead.

~Review~

Wow!!!!

The second in The Arrangement series, this was a short, SHORT, novella that is part of a multi-series of novellas surrounding the Hero/heroine, Sean and Avery, respectively. I fell in love with them in the first installment and did all over again with this one! Despite being so damn frustratingly short, they pack a punch!

The story literally takes off from where it ended and we are treated to the angst-filled love brewing between Sean and Avery. Just when things go shit they get good again…only to become the mother of all shit.

Awesome series, can’t wait for the good stuff to happen to these two. Still lots of secrets and to be revealed and love to blossom! LOVED IT!!!!

I highly recommend it!

~Excerpt~

When we reached the top, the organ dude stopped playing immediately. He slid off of the stool, and then backed into the corner to allow us access into the cramped space. “Who are you? What are you doing here?” He tugged at his suspenders, running his fingers on the undersides.

I tripped on a couple of mud-splattered tennis shoes on the floor as I tried to make room for Singer. She looked at Organ Dude and put a finger to her lips before examining the instrument.

“Reginald Vanderkeller.” I held out my han

d in a single fluid motion. “American Guild of Organists. You’re a finalist in our contest, but we have to do an inspection first. If you could give us some room?”

Singer was probing along a cluster of round,

 white things above the keys. “We’re not looking for a stop sign, we’re looking for an organ stop.”

“Are those stops?” I asked.

“Who are you?” the organist demanded again. “You can’t be from the AGO if you don’t know what a stop is.”
The organ dude was kind of condescending. I was tempted to go all Big Bird on his ass and make him pee his pants. Instead, I cut the guy a break. We had busted into his loft, after all. “She’s in training.” I placed a hand on Singer’s shoulder. “I have to ask her questions in order to test her. Please, if you could give her a moment.”
Singer continued searching. “Anyway, a stop keeps the pressurized air—they also call it wind—from flowing into the pipes so the organist can control which pipes sound. It lets them have different sounds like reed and cheesy saxophone and stuff.”

“I’ve never liked the saxophone one much either,” Organ Dude said.

I glanced at him, and he shrugged. “How do you know all this?” I asked, turning back to Singer. “Besides your studies with the AGO, of course.”

“Dad used pipe organs in some of his recordings. I paid attention. He liked to bring me to the studio.” Singer continued to examine each stop until she paused. A sly smile formed on her face as she pressed a button.

The faint clicking sound filled the quiet loft. The organ swung forward a bit, like it was on a hinge or something. What had we found, exactly?

The Secret Year by Jennifer R. Hubbard

The Secret Year by Jennifer R. Hubbard

~~~
The Secret Year by Jennifer R. Hubbard
Hardcover, 192 pages
Published January 7th 2010 by Viking Juvenile
~Rating: 3.5/5 stars~
~Description~
Take Romeo and Juliet. Add The Outsiders. Mix thoroughly. Colt and Julia were secretly together for an entire year, and no one,not even Julia’s boyfriend, knew. They had nothing in common, with Julia in her country club world on Black Mountain and Colt from down on the flats, but it never mattered. Until Julia dies in a car accident, and Colt learns the price of secrecy. He can’t mourn Julia openly, and he’s tormented that he might have played a part in her death. When Julia’s journal ends up in his hands, Colt relives their year together at the same time that he’s desperately trying to forget her. But how do you get over someone who was never yours in the first place?
~Review~
This book is really hard to rate, because it was good, really good, there were just so many opportunities to make it better. Colt was what made this book good. Reading it reminded me a little bit of Perks of Being a Wallflower, because like Charlie, Colt lived most of his life inside his head. He relayed events as they happened without being overly emotional about them.
The Secret Year by Jennifer R. Hubbard deals with love and loss and grief. The Secret Year is one of those books which seems to get male protagonist narration right. Colt secretly dates rich girl Julia for a year, but when her unexpected death occurs, Colt is left with nothing but secrets and her notebook
 Even though this novel made me tear up a couple of times, I still really enjoyed reading it. I recommend this novel to people who are into romance novels because you can truly feel the romance in the air.
